Summer Camp 2010

Please turn in $ and Forms as soon as possible!

Where will we be going this year?

In case you didn't know, we will be going to Camp Grimes http://www.mycampgrimes.org/ near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Parkway right here in North Carolina.  Our troop has been to this camp before and I'll have to say that it has been some of the best summer camp experiences we've ever had.   We are all looking forward to another great trip this year.

What kind of information will you receive?

To reduce our costs to the troop, we will be 'going green' or electronic, whichever you prefer to call it.  We are going to be either emailing information/forms with the information you need or providing links on our website (http://www.bsatroop144.com) so its in an easy place to find.  In years past we've provided printouts and things but this did not appear to be the best method since so many people lost their paperwork before we even left for summer camp (yes, that includes me!).

What is one of the things I need to be working on right now?

Top priority - medical forms!  There are new BSA medical forms this year for your Scouts.  The rules have changed a bit too, so here we go:

  1. Each year your Scout must have a physical.  Forms from previous years lasted for 3 years but now the form is only good for 1 year.  For our regular campouts, only parts A and C would need to be filled out, however for summer camp, sections A, B and C need to be filled out.  The good thing is, if you have to get the form filled out you might as well do the whole thing, then they are good for a year no matter what type of camping we do.  If you have already filled out sections A and C on the new medical form and your son is NOT attending camp, no changes are needed to your form.

By the way, the troop has to have a medical form for your son year round anyway, but you probably have already heard one of us say that.
  2. Adults - remember that rule where if you were above 40 years old you had to have a full physical, but if you were below 40 you didn't? Throw that rule out the window!  Now, all adults have to follow the same rules as the boys.  Sections A and C for regular campouts, sections A, B and C for anything over 72 hours.  We will be pretty strict on this for summer camp to reduce our legal liabilities in case an adult has a problem while at camp.

  3. You must give your form directly to myself or to Shawn Coffman.  You cannot email forms to us (especially since section B requires a doctors signature).

So, in summary your son(s) will need parts A, B & C filled out on the medical form for summer camp.  Adults who will be staying more than 72 hours must have the same sections filled out on their forms. No exceptions to this rule!
